Does Karma Exist?

Does Karma Exist?

October 27, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Carmen Honacker“Does karma exist? How does it work? And ifkarma is real, and ‘god’ exists, why am I being punished?” I don’t think I can count how often I have been asked that, and how often I would ask myself the very same question.
I’m not an expert, nor am I some kind of minister or religious scholar. I am, however, pretty good at observing people and situations. Over the years I simply came up with my own conclusions of how “karma” or “god” works. So before I continue, I want to make it clear that these are my opinions, view points and truths.
I finally started seeing that most of the sadness and disappointment in my life was brought on by my own choices. Based on who I am, I tended to attract certain individuals. It’s very similar to animal instincts. Just like a wolf recognizes others from his pack, so I would recognize those who would continue to fulfill my expectations of disappointment and betrayal. I would seek out people with very specific behavioral patterns, even though I knew on some level that it would end in heartbreak and disaster. I was raised to never say “no,” and to think of my own needs and wants as unimportant and unworthy. Actually, it rather astonishes me how keen my senses were when it came to selecting people who were toxic for me on numerous occasions.
Some of the things I’ve experienced were not my fault. Especially things I’ve endured when I was a child. Children are generally innocent. It isn’t their fault when they are being abused, molested, abandoned or mistreated. No god came down to punish them, and they sure as hell are not experiencing bad karma from a life they lived a few hundred years ago. To suggest such a thing is not only ridiculous to me, but a crime.
The damaging thing of most religions is the guilt that is being put on us. We are eager to take responsibility for things that simply were not our fault, and things we had absolutely no control over. When my mother died I was 19. Given who she was at times, I had often wished her dead. Naturally, after she died I felt responsible. Almost every single person I know, who has lost someone to death, felt in some way responsible. Maybe we didn’t love them enough? Maybe we should have done something, even though we don’t know what that could have been. We get angry at “god” and karma; because why would a god with so much power and love for us allow us to suffer so?
Well, I’m not going to argue if god does or does not exist. But we keep forgetting free will, and free will accounts for a lot of stuff. My mother chose to live the way she did. She chose to eat crappy food, to not really take care of her health, to not go to the doctor until it was too late, because sometimes being sick afforded her the only type of power in her life. And so her list of diseases and issues kept growing. My best friend’s mother smoked at least a pack a day, and so did my brother-in-law. While we always hoped for the best, it wasn’t a shocker that both ended up with lung cancer. Sadly, my friend’s mom died. Luckily my brother-in-law survived and, apparently, is doing fine. I don’t think one was more “loved by god,” or had better karma than the other!
Sometimes, for whatever reason, there is just bad luck. Sometimes good things happen to good people, and tools get away with murder. The reason that we are so affected by the bad things happening to good people is that these are often big things; like losing a parent, child or other family member. One of those experiences can scar us for life, and often make up for 10 betrayals or crappy relationships. I believe that in 99% of cases, a person isn’t to blame when they lose a loved one. Sadly, I also don’t believe that “god works in mysterious ways,” and that ”he” loves one person more than another.
I think the reason that many don’t look at life and situations this way is simple. There is, or at least for me there was, a certain hopelessness in knowing that my life is up to me, and that I have to take responsibility for each and every word and action. It’s also not particularly inspiring to know that, no matter how “good” I am, bad things still might and will happen to me. All I can do and have control over is how I treat myself and others. Finally, just imagine what it would do to someone if they could truly grasp the full repercussions of their actions, without a higher power forgiving them, or making it all better. How sucky would it be if all the religious extremists did not have their god to blame anymore for their appalling actions, discrimination and bigotry? Take god away, and a lot of righteous folks turn into crazy, mean-spirited bullies.
I believe in cause and effect. I believe that being dishonest, mean, rude, selfish and unkind, or otherwise a tool will backfire eventually. Not because you got punished, but because sooner or later you’ll have to pay the price for your own choices. It’s not karma or god; it’s simply life, cause and effect, nature or law of the fittest. Understanding how my choices affect my quality of life and getting away from the victim mentality at least no longer makes me feel like someone who is unloved by a higher power, or punished by something I am not even aware of. Interestingly enough, I still believe in “something.” I am just no longer expecting this power to shape the outcome of my life.

Psychic Workout: The Number 13

Psychic Workout: The Number 13

October 25, 2010 at 11:00 am
By Psychic Marin ext. 5113Hannah in Sonoma, California asks:
As a child, my mother would always keep me home with the intent of keeping mesafe whenever there was a Friday the 13th. I have always wondered what the significance is of the number 13, why is it seen as a bad number, and why is a Friday the 13th so feared?
Psychic Marin ext. 5113 responds:
Imagine being issued boarding pass number 13 just before entering an airplane, or walking into a stadium and searching for your seat… seat number 13! How would you feel? Have you ever noticed how people become uneasy at the association of the number 13? What is the root of these fears?
The number 13 has been a mysterious obsession, to the point where many buildings do not have a 13th floor, and hotels often omit the room number 13. In the legal field, attorneys may consciously choose to sign documents on either the 12th of 14th of the month, avoiding the dreaded 13th. Gamblers may opt out on the 13th, and surgeons avoid scheduling important medical procedures on that day.
So it’s obvious that fears regarding the number 13 still exist, and therefore precautions must be taken, but from where did these fears originate?
There are many cultural legends that perpetuated the allure of the number 13. Some relate the fear of 13 to Norse mythology, where Loki, one of the more evil figures, became the 13th guest at a party and ended up causing the death of the god of light. In Rome, witches would gather in groups of 12 members, and the 13th guest was said to be a bringer of evil. On Friday, October 13, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Grand Master and Knights of the Knights Templar. In Christianity, there were 13 attendees at the last supper, and Friday was believed to be the day of Christ’s crucifixion.
In numerology, the number 12 is associated with fulfillment and completion. For example, there are 12 months in a year, 12 on a clock face, 12 items in a dozen, and 12 signs of the zodiac. The number 13 suffers much wrath simply because of its position following the number 12, leaving a feeling of uncertainty or imbalance.
In an attempt to remove much of the negative stigma, people are rediscovering the allure of the number 13. Modern paganism and Wicca have embraced the number 13, understanding that there are positive aspects of the number 13 that can balance the negative.
In numerology, 13 is reduced to the equation 1+3 = 4. Four is a number representing balance and totality. There are four elements, and four directions. For Jews, 13 is seen as the age of maturity, and the number of principles of Jewish faith. It is also believed that God has 13 attributes of mercy.
Hopefully, this closer exploration of the origins and superstitions surrounding the number 13 has eased some of your fears. There’s no need to stay home in order to keep safe, and if you do, you may find yourself missing out on a lot of school or work, as the number 13 falls on a Friday more often than any other day!

The Real Law of Attraction

I do this all the time. I, KWP, gives freely and I ask for nothing. I get nothing in return too. See it works.

October 25, 2010 at 5:00 am
By Carmen HonackerThere are so many books promising love, success, money, fame and fortune, if we only follow the rules of these two laws. Given how much material can be found on these topics, one would think that a lot more of us would be a lot more successful. This is because all of these “proven methods” don’t mention a few things that will not only drastically change the outcome, but actually leave you in the exact same spot you found yourself in before you read the book, minus whatever money you spent on the “proven method.”
The Law of Attraction
Wouldn’t it be great if we could all find the love of our lives, our soul mate and life mate, by just following theinstructions of a book? Oh, how we hope… and each time another discovery is made that tells us that this is now the real way of finding true love, because new scientific discoveries, as well as ancient truths from a magical book hidden under a rock in the Sahara desert, which carbon dated back 5,000 years ago, are definitely going to work… even for you!
The Law of Attraction does work! But what most “experts” fail to share is the minor detail that you attract who you are, and what you think of yourself! You just have to believe—and, of course, you have to know that you deserve. Just keep repeating the mantra of “I deserve.” It might actually finally get stuck… and backfire!
Why, you ask? A person with low self-esteem, a person who is negative and down on themselves, will usually not suddenly become confident by reading a book, period. Yes, everything is possible, but not by sitting on your butt and doing nothing! Changes require work, and usually hard work! So a person without a shred of confidence will usually repeat the mantra, but take it to a completely new level of extremism. This is when they start telling the whole world “darn it, I do deserve!” The previously sad rants then turn into narcissistic statements of how great they are… and how, sadly, no one recognizes it. Meanwhile, the love they are so desperately seeking stays hidden, because now they sound like desperate and still insecure tools, versus just being downers before.
If we are broken, we will usually attract others who are broken. If we are superficial, we will attract another, who is also superficial. The whole myth of opposites attracting is true for about one minute. Usually, opposites will drive each other crazy in the long run, and do not work out. And when I mean opposite, I mean truly opposite in character and being. Not something lame like different tastes in music or food!
Attracting true happiness has to always start with oneself and the willingness to grow, which means change. I’m a firm believer in therapy, but there are other ways as well. In order to attract what truly makes you happy, you have to first learn to be happy with yourself, knowing who you are and what you really want. Only when you know these things will you know what you truly deserve, without having to blast it from the rooftops.
The Law of Abundance
The same principal listed above also applies for this law. Hence, it is pretty difficult to achieve abundance! For example, when I lost my job, it was pretty hard to sit around and say to myself “don’t worry; you have abundance in your life. You’ll find something and you won’t lose everything you own over it.” The more time that went by, the harder it was to be “positive.” But I knew that if I started panicking or appearing desperate in job interviews, I’d just make my situation worse. But this is where it came in handy that I had done at least some of the work! I did know what I was worth and who I am, even though my foundation had become a bit shaky. I simply would not accept defeat. The thought of losing my home, my car or everything simply didn’t get any power from me. Oh yes, these thoughts occurred, but I would immediately stop myself in my tracks and do something productive, like writing. For some strange reason, maybe because I grew up in such poor conditions, money has not been a source of anxiety or fear in many years. Not because I am so well off, but because I won’t give power to the fear. And while I never became rich, I always had a roof over my head (a nice one), money to pay my car, buy clothes and eat the food I want.
The thing that no one likes to hear is that the life we are living is an immediate result of who we believe we are and what we think is possible. To become this person of Zen, the person who attracts others, in business and personal life, the one with the great friends, the nice things and the happy relationship, and the one who truly feels at peace with themselves and the world, one has to be willing to pay the price. And the price is work.
But I kept my eyes on the prize, and after a while it became a little easier. I started to attract completely different people and situations. But then, I no longer see myself the same way I did a mere year ago, not to mention two or three years ago. I can’t quite describe it, because I am still the same person—and yet, I am completely different. I can do and say things now that I never thought possible. With each passing day, the “new” me is getting stronger, while the old tapes in my head are slowly being overwritten and erased.
I do believe that both laws are accurate and will work. But boy, I never thought it would take that much hard work, dedication and will power to make them happen. So here’s your secret, free of charge. It’s also called “Common Sense.”

Prayer to Abundantia special thanks to Tweetles

Goddess Abundantia is the Roman Goddess of Abundance, Good Fortune and Success. Her name means "plenty" or "overflowing riches." She has also been called "the beautiful maiden of success."

Abundantia often carries a cornucopia, known as the horn of plenty. This cornucopia is symbolic of a funnel that continually outpours from the Universal Source, the infinite and all encompassing supply of abundance, good fortune, opportunities, success . . . continually outpouring all good things!

Abundantia is extremely wise in the ways of finance! If invited she will provide guidance toward investments, finance and business/venture planning. A powerful protectress of prosperity, if requested, Goddess Abundantia will safeguard our valuables, providing us with peace of mind by ensuring that which we deem to be valuable is secure and well protected.
As a show of your faith in Heaven's readiness to help you, hold one or more coins in the hand you don't write with (this is your receptive hand), and say:

"Beautiful Abundantia, I desire to be like you—carefree and filled with faith that my supply is already met in all ways. Help me replace any money worries with joy and gratitude. Help me open my arms so that Heaven may easily help me. Thank you for all of your guidance, gifts, and protection. I'm truly grateful, and I'm abundantly, joyful and fulfilled. I let go, and relax in the sure knowledge that I'm completely taken care of, immediately and in the future.

Try this prayer to ABUNDANTIA before you sleep, when you awake something will happen to remind you of your inner hope.

Soon money and success will follow.

Amino acids in watermelon lower blood pressure Monday, October 18, 2010 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Watermelon is a classic summertime favorite packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and many other nutrients. And a new study out of Florida State University (FSU) has pinpointed a few specific amino acids present in watermelon that help improve arterial function and lower blood pressure.

According to FSU researchers, watermelon is rich in the amino acid L-citrulline, a precursor of L-arginine, that reverses the effects of prehypertension by maintaining arterial function and improving proper blood flow. Published in the journal American Journal of Hypertension, the study is the first of its kind to show this definitive benefit in humans.

"We are the first to document improved aortic hemodynamics in prehypertensive but otherwise healthy middle-aged men and women receiving therapeutic doses of watermelon," explained Arturo Figueroa, assistant professor at FSU and co-author of the study. "These findings suggest that this 'functional food' has a vasodilatory effect, and one that may prevent hypertension from progressing to full-blown hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease."

When consumed, L-citrulline is processed by the body into L-arginine, which is known to produce necessary nitric oxide in the blood. Nitric oxide maintains healthy blood pressurelevels and regulates vascular tone without inducing any negative side effects. And according to Figueroa, watermelon is the richest edible source of L-citrulline.

Both Figueroa and co-author Bahram Arjmandi described watermelon as a "functional" food, meaning it is "scientifically shown to have health-promoting or disease-preventing properties, above and beyond the other intrinsically healthy nutrients [it also supplies]."

"Individuals with increased blood pressure and arterial stiffness -- especially those who are older and those with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes -- would benefit from L-citrulline," said Figueroa. "The optimal dose appears to be four to six grams a day."

Plant, herb compound prevents brain inflammation Monday, October 18, 2010 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Age-related brain illnesses like Alzheimer's disease are devastating, but there are many ways in which individuals can help thwart their onset. According to a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition, luteolin, a nutrient found in various vegetables and herbs, reduces inflammation in the brain responsible for causing memory and cognitive dysfunction.

At the first sign of an infection, immune responders in the brain and spinal cord known as microglial cells normally begin to produce signaling molecules called cytokines that generate an inflammatory response to deal with the problem. But as people age, the microglial cells begin to degrade in function, leading to excessive cytokine production and corresponding brain damage.

"We found previously that during normal aging, microglial cells become dysregulated and begin producing excessive levels of inflammatory cytokines," explained Rodney Johnson, professor of animal sciences at the University of Illinois (UI) and author of the study. "We think this contributes to cognitive aging and is a predisposing factor for the development of neurodegenerative diseases."

But luteolin -- which is found in foods like carrots, peppers, celery, peppermint, rosemary, chamomile, and olive oil -- effectively produce a natural anti-inflammatory effect that stops the errant microglial cells from causing damage. Even during otherwise normal microglial function, luteolin helps to protect cell neurons from damage as well.

"The neurons survived because the luteolin inhibited the production of neurotoxic inflammatory mediators," explained Johnson.

For the study, the team compared two groups of mice, one of which was fed luteolin. Aged mice taking luteolin performed better in learning and memory tests than did their non-supplemented peers, and the cytokine levels in the brains of mice in the luteolin group were comparable to those of much younger mice.

"When we provided the old mice luteolin in the diet it reduced inflammation in the brain and at the same time restored working memory to what was seen in young cohorts," Johnson said.

The real reason McDonald's burgers don't decompose

(NaturalNews) It's always entertaining when the mainstream media "discovers" something they think is new even though the natural health community has been talking about for years. The New York Times, for example, recently ran a story entitled When Drugs Cause Problems They Are Supposed to Prevent(http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/h...). We've been covering the same topic for years, reporting on how chemotherapy causes cancer, osteoporosis drugs cause bone fractures and antidepressant drugs cause suicidal behavior.

The latest "new" discovery by the mainstream media is that McDonald's Happy Mealhamburgers and fries won't decompose, even if you leave them out for six months. This story has been picked up by CNN, the Washington Post and many other MSM outlets which appear startled that junk food from fast food chains won't decompose.

The funny thing about this is that the natural health industry already covered this topic years ago. Remember Len Foley's Bionic Burger video? It was posted in 2007 and eventually racked up a whopping 2 million views on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYyD...). And this video shows a guy who bought his McDonald's hamburgers in 1989 -- burgers that still haven't decomposed in over two decades!

Now, he has an entire museum of non-decomposed burgers in his basement.

Did the mainstream media pick up on this story? Nope. Not a word. The story was completely ignored. It was only in 2010 when an artist posted a story about a non-decomposing McDonald's hamburger from six months ago that the news networks ran with the story.

Check out the video link above and you'll see an entire museum of Big Macs and hamburgers spanning the years -- none of which have decomposed.

This is especially interesting because the more recent "Happy Meal Project" which only tracks a burger for six months has drawn quite a lot of criticism from a few critics who say the burgers will decompose if you give them enough time. They obviously don't know about the mummified burger museum going all the way back to 1989. This stuff never seems to decompose!

Why don't McDonald's hamburgers decompose?

So why don't fast food burgers and fries decompose in the first place? The knee-jerk answer is often thought to be, "Well they must be made with so many chemicals that even mold won't eat them." While that's part of the answer, it's not the whole story.

The truth is many processed foods don't decompose and won't be eaten by molds, insects or even rodents. Try leaving a tub of margarine outside in your yard and see if anything bothers to eat it. You'll find that the margarine stays seems immortal, too!

Potato chips can last for decades. Frozen pizzas are remarkably resistant to decomposition. And you know those processed Christmas sausages and meats sold around the holiday season? You can keep them for years and they'll never rot.

With meats, the primary reason why they don't decompose is their high sodium content. Salt is a great preservative, as early humans have known for thousands of years. McDonald'smeat patties are absolutely loaded with sodium -- so much so that they qualify as "preserved" meat, not even counting the chemicals you might find in the meat.

To me, there's not much mystery about the meat not decomposing. The real question in my mind is why don't the buns mold? That's the really scary part, since healthy bread begins to mold within days. What could possibly be in McDonald's hamburger buns that would ward off microscopic life for more than two decades?

As it turns out, unless you're a chemist you probably can't even read the ingredients list out loud. Here's what McDonald's own website says you'll find in their buns:

Enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid, enzymes), water, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, yeast, soybean oil and/or partially hydrogenated soybean oil, contains 2% or less of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, wheat gluten, ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, dough conditioners (sodium stearoyl lactylate, datem, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, mono- and diglycerides, ethoxylated monoglycerides, monocalcium phosphate, enzymes, guar gum, calcium peroxide, soy flour), calcium propionate and sodium propionate (preservatives), soy lecithin.

Great stuff, huh? You gotta especially love the HFCS (diabetes, anyone?), partially-hydrogenated soybean oil (anybody want heart disease?) and the long list of chemicals such as ammonium sulfate and sodium proprionate. Yum. I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Now here's the truly shocking part about all this: In my estimation, the reason nothing will eat a McDonald's hamburger bun (except a human) is because it's not food!

No normal animal will perceive a McDonald's hamburger bun as food, and as it turns out, neither will bacteria or fungi. To their senses, it's just not edible stuff. That's why these bionic burger buns just won't decompose.

Which brings me to my final point about this whole laughable distraction: There is only one species on planet Earth that's stupid enough to think a McDonald's hamburger is food. This species is suffering from skyrocketing rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, dementia and obesity. This species claims to be the most intelligent species on the planet, and yet it behaves in such a moronic way that it feeds its own children poisonous chemicals and such atrocious non-foods that even fungi won't eat it (and fungi will eat cow manure, just FYI).

Care to guess which species I'm talking about?

That's the real story here. It's not that McDonald's hamburgers won't decompose; it's that people are stupid enough to eat them. But you won't find CNN reporting that story any time soon.

Weekly Numerology Report

This week we continue with the Venus retrograde and Venus is rules over money, love, beauty and women. From what I understand Venus doesn't go direct until the 18th of November.  Venus is our ability to attract things.  Remember Kittens our month is a 1 month so 1 is always in play and our year is a 3 so that is always present. Together they add to 4 so 4's vibrational energy is present and strong this month as well.

Sunday: 10/17/10 Our 8 day is a great for money though it may feel a bit hard to get with Venus in retrograde. Once added to the rest of the date we have a total of 12 which is 3. 3 is a great time to talk and use your artistic talents. Use it all wisely when you are doing dealings for finances.

Monday: 10/18/10 our 9 day is all for giving and compassion. This is a love day. But thanks to us having a 4 year/month and a total for 4 with the day expect some service and order to be in excess for your energy. You may find money coming from the service industry.

Tuesday: 10/19/10 We have triple one's again folks. This is the 10/01/10 and 10/10/10 energy feelings all over again though less intense. You're going to feel that pioneering independent spirit pushing you to do something. Thanks be that we have 5 energy here as well. Today is an expansive, big is better day.

Wednesday: 10/20/10 or 10/20/2010 Do you see it Kittens? Of course you do. 2 10's and 2 20's
That means 1 and 2 are dominant today. You want independence and balance. You're going to want partnering and administrating. Today adds to 6 so the need for responsibility and service to others will be on the agenda too.

Thursday:10/21/10 As all Kittens know, 3 is with Jupiter so being expansive and money is on the table. So scream out what you need financially to the Universe today. The total today is 7. 7's energy is about meditation, knowledge and understanding. We know that leads to power. We can use this power to address all financial situations today. Use 3's communicative power to get through any bills that you have to call upon.

Friday: 10/22/10 We have the Master Builder's energy today to help us. Added energy from 4 for more. 4 is our door and our hard working energy. The day itself is an 8 so power and material manifestations will be accomplished. Put everything you have Kittens into today. Use this powerful day to set yourself up for financial freedom tomorrow. Tonight look up and you will see a very full moon. The energy on this day will be explosive and high. Take deep breaths and keep yourself going. Let nothing get in your way. The full moon is in Aries. That means adventure and war. Just know that something has to be destroyed to be rebuilt into something better.

Saturday: 10/23/10 Here are today's numbers 1, 3, 5, and 9. Kittens today is about drives, inspiration, quick thinking and obligations. Ask yourselves some questions today. Think about your dreams and desires. Then think about how you can put them into action for financial freedom.

From a Maine House, a National Foreclosure Freeze

DENMARK, Me. — The house that set off the national furor over faulty foreclosures is blue-gray and weathered. The porch is piled with furniture and knickknacks awaiting the next yard sale. In the driveway is a busted pickup truck. No one who lives there is going anywhere anytime soon.

Bankers Ignored Signs of Trouble on Foreclosures
Nicolle Bradbury bought this house seven years ago for $75,000, a major step up from the trailer she had been living in with her family. But she lost her job and the $474 monthly mortgage payment became difficult, then impossible.
It should have been a routine foreclosure, with Mrs. Bradbury joining the anonymous millions quietly dispossessed since the recession began. But she was savvy enough to contact a nonprofit group, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, where for once in her 38 years, she caught a break.
Her file was pulled, more or less at random, by Thomas A. Cox, a retired lawyer who volunteers at Pine Tree. He happened to know something about foreclosures because when he worked for a bank he did them all the time. Twenty years later, he had switched sides and, he says, was trying to make amends.

Suddenly, there is a frenzy over foreclosures. Every attorney general in the country is participating in an investigation into the flawed paperwork and questionable methods behind many of them. A Senate hearing is scheduled, and federal inquiries have begun. The housing market, which runs on foreclosure sales, is in turmoil. Bank stocks fell on Thursday as analysts tried to gauge the impact on lenders' bottom lines.
All of this is largely because Mr. Cox realized almost immediately that Mrs. Bradbury's foreclosure file did not look right. The documents from the lender, GMAC Mortgage, were approved by an employee whose title was "limited signing officer," an indication to the lawyer that his knowledge of the case was effectively nonexistent.
Mr. Cox eventually won the right to depose the employee, who casually acknowledged that he had prepared 400 foreclosures a day for GMAC and that contrary to his sworn statements, they had not been reviewed by him or anyone else.
GMAC, the country's fourth-largest mortgage lender, called this omission a technicality but was forced last month to halt foreclosures in the 23 states, including Maine, where they must be approved by a court. Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and other lenders that used robo-signers — the term caught on instantly — have enacted their own freezes.
The tragedy of foreclosure is that some homeowners may be able to stay where they are if their lenders are more interested in modification than eviction. Without a job, Mrs. Bradbury is not one of them. Her family, including her 14-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son, lives on welfare and food stamps.
"A lot of people say we just want a free ride," Mrs. Bradbury said. "That's not it. I've worked since I was 14. I'm not lazy. I'm just trying to keep us together. If we lost the house, my family would have to break up."
It has been two years since she last paid the mortgage, which surprises even her lawyers.
"Had GMAC followed the legal requirements, she would have lost her home a long time ago," acknowledged Geoffrey S. Lewis, another lawyer handling her case.
[Why Homeownership Can Still Pay Off]
GMAC, which began as the financing arm of General Motors, has received $17 billion from taxpayers in an effort to keep it from failing and is now majority-owned by the federal government. A spokeswoman for the lender declined to comment on Mrs. Bradbury's case because it was still being litigated.
John J. Aromando of the firm of Pierce Atwood in Portland, Me., the lawyer for GMAC and Fannie Mae, the mortgage holding company that owns Mrs. Bradbury's loan, did not return calls for comment on Thursday.
Fannie Mae and GMAC, which serviced the loan for Fannie, have now most likely spent more to dislodge Mrs. Bradbury than her house is worth. Yet for all their efforts, they are not only losing this case, but also potentially laying the groundwork for foreclosure challenges nationwide.
"This ammunition will be front and center in thousands of foreclosure cases," said Don Saunders of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association.
Just a few miles from the New Hampshire border, this slice of Maine does not have much in the way of industry or, for that matter, people. Mrs. Bradbury grew up around here, married and had her children here, and married for a second time here. Her parents still live nearby.
In 2003, her brother-in-law at the time offered to sell her a house on property adjacent to his. It was across from a noisy construction supply site. But it was ringed by maple, evergreen and willow trees, and who does not want to be a homeowner, especially when GMAC Mortgage will give you a loan for the entire purchase price and then another loan to improve the property?
"I was very happy," she remembered. "It was a new beginning."
But Mrs. Bradbury lost her job as an employment counselor in 2006 and did part-time work after that. Her husband, Scott, was in poor health and had other problems. He could not work as a roofer. She fell behind and got a modification from GMAC. It increased her monthly payments and provided no relief.
Finally, in late 2008, she stopped paying altogether, and GMAC asked a court to approve her eviction without a trial. By the summer of 2009, this removal was well under way when Mr. Cox picked up her file.
Mr. Cox, 66, worked in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Maine National Bank, a subsidiary of the Bank of New England, which went under. His job was to call in small-business loans. The borrowers had often pledged their houses as collateral, which meant foreclosure.
"It was extraordinarily unpleasant, but it paid well," he said. "I had a family to support."
The work exacted its cost: his marriage ended and a serious depression began. He gave up law and found solace in building houses. By April 2008, he said, he was sufficiently recovered and started volunteering at Pine Tree Legal.
By the time Mr. Cox saw Mrs. Bradbury's case, it was just about over. Last January, Judge Keith A. Powers of the Ninth District Court of Maine approved the foreclosure, leaving the case alive only to establish exactly how much Mrs. Bradbury owed.
Mr. Cox vowed to a colleague that he would expose GMAC's process and its limited signing officer, Jeffrey Stephan. A lawyer in another foreclosure case had already deposed Mr. Stephan, but Mr. Cox wanted to take the questioning much further. In June, he got his chance. A few weeks later, he spelled out in a court filing what he had learned from the robo-signer:
"When Stephan says in an affidavit that he has personal knowledge of the facts stated in his affidavits, he doesn't. When he says that he has custody and control of the loan documents, he doesn't. When he says that he is attaching 'a true and accurate' copy of a note or a mortgage, he has no idea if that is so, because he does not look at the exhibits. When he makes any other statement of fact, he has no idea if it is true. When the notary says that Stephan appeared before him or her, he didn't."
GMAC's reaction to the deposition was to hire two new law firms, including Mr. Aromando's firm, among the most prominent in the state. They argued that what Mrs. Bradbury and her lawyers were doing was simply a "dodge": she had not paid her mortgage and should be evicted.
They also said that Mr. Cox, despite working pro bono, had taken the deposition "to prejudice and influence the public" against GMAC for his own commercial benefit. They asked that the transcript be deleted from any blog that had posted it and that it be put under court seal.
In a ruling late last month, Judge Powers said that GMAC, despite its expensive legal talent and the fact that it got "a second bite of the apple" by filing amended foreclosure papers, still could not get this eviction right.
Even the amended documents did not bother to include the actual street address of the property it was trying to seize, reason enough, the judge wrote, to reject the request for immediate foreclosure without a trial.
But Judge Powers went further than that, saying that GMAC had been admonished in a Florida court for using robo-signers four years ago but had persisted. "It is well past the time for such practices to end," he wrote, adding that GMAC had acted "in bad faith" by submitting Mr. Stephan's material:
"Filing such a document without significant regard for its accuracy, which the court in ordinary circumstances may never be able to investigate or otherwise verify, is a serious and troubling matter."
It was not a complete loss for GMAC — Judge Powers declined to find the lender in contempt — but nearly so. GMAC was ordered, as a penalty, to pay Mr. Cox personally what he would have been paid for his work on the deposition and related matters had he been charging Mrs. Bradbury. That, he says, is $27,000.
The court's ruling on GMAC's "bad faith" is already being taken up by foreclosure defense lawyers around the country. Mr. Cox "did a remarkable job of proving the lenders not only rubber-stamped these loans on the front end, but they rubber-stamped them on the back end," said Mr. Saunders of the legal aid group.
GMAC, which this week expanded its foreclosure freeze to the entire country, is not giving up on Mrs. Bradbury. It will try for the third time to evict her when the case goes to trial this winter.
If Mrs. Bradbury is not quite victorious, she is still in her house, and for her that is the only thing that counts. If she can get her pickup fixed, she will go back to looking for a job.
"I am not leaving," she said this week, standing out on her front lawn, the autumn splendor spread all around her. "We have nowhere to go."
