By A Shelter Friend
Elizabeth town, NC -

My name is Nugget. My life changed a couple of days ago, when I was too curious and ran out the door looking for a girlfriend. You see, I saw the beautiful girl puppy across the street, and I just couldn't wait to meet her. It was love at first sight, and I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I know now that I should have, because I did not see what was coming at me when I tried to cross the road. The next thing I knew, I was in horrible pain. Pain like I had never felt before in my young life. It hurt so bad, that I could not even breathe. I was stuck under a car after being hit, and I tried to get up but I couldn't move.

There was a lady that tried to grab me to get me out, but every time she grabbed for me, the pain got worse.

"Please do not touch me it hurts even more when you touch me," I thought.

But she didn't understand me and the next touch really hurt bad, and I had to make it stop, so I turned around and snapped at her. I didn't mean to but it just hurt so bad.

They did not give up on me, and finally they got me out from under that car and took me to another place. By then, my body was shaking and I was so, so very cold and getting very weak.

Is this how you feel when you die? No, please... NO, PLEASE! I am not ready, I am only a little boy. I promise to be good, I will never run out the door again. I will never pee pee in the house. I will never steal the sandwich from the coffee table again, and I will never, ever eat the cell phone cord again. I really, really promise to be good.

Please do not let me die!

The people at the vet gave me some medicine and I feel lots better. It doesn't hurt so much any more. But all of the people look sad when they look at me, and I am scared of what that might mean. They said that it will cost lots of money to get me better. If I do not get the money they will put me to sleep and send me to Raleigh. The nice people that made me feel better were crying when they said that. What does that mean? I have never been to Raleigh. Is it a bad place?

Can you help me? Please, I want to live!
________

Well, we have finally been put in the untenable position of not being able to help a dog desperately in need. We just don’t have the funds to do this. This is breaking our hearts.

Nugget, a one year old Chihuahua, is fighting against all odds stacked against him. He was struck by a car yesterday. It took two hours to get him out from under the car. He was in extreme pain, and understandably snapped at the person trying to help, and broke the skin. Any dog would do this.

Nugget was taken to the vet, and his owner was located. Nugget was not up-to-date on his rabies, and in fact, we don’t know if he’s ever been vaccinated. The owner said that he got the dog from someone else and the original owner told them he was up-to-date, but they never checked.

Nugget was examined and he has extensive injuries and is in extreme pain. He has a broken femur, fractured pelvis and may have neurological issues in his rear end. He will need extensive surgery by an orthopedic specialist as the scope is beyond the talents of our vet. Despite all of this, Nugget's spirit is strong, and he is a fighter. We think he should have his chance.

The options are:

1. Euthanize immediately & test brain tissue post-mortem for rabies, which has to be done by the state (look at this face – we all know the horrible way they test for rabies)

2. Quarantine him for 10 days while is being treated (pain management), and if funds are not raised, euthanize after his 10 day quarantine, and not have to test for rabies

3. Raise $3,000 in funds to get Nugget the surgery he needs

4. A rescue that will step up and commit to him, assuming medical responsibility for Nugget

#1’s one and 2 are heartbreaking choices we don’t want to make. But we honestly won’t have any other choice if something doesn’t come through for him.

We’ve had 4 very expensive medical cases in the past three weeks, and we haven’t even come close to raising funds to cover those. We just can’t assume another case without sponsorship or rescue help. If you know of a rescue that specializes in cases like Nugget's, please, please tag them on this photo. We need everyone's help. We can't do this one alone.

We don’t want to make the choice to euthanize Nugget, but if we cannot raise the funds to repair his little body, we are going to have to make that difficult choice. Nugget has touched the hearts of everyone who has seen or tried to help him. Please help us help him.
