Money Saver
1) Expensive Coffee Drinks
Are you really spending $5 a day... $35 dollars a week... $150 a month on cups of coffee? Make your own and bring it to work in a thermos. There's nothing like brewing it at home and you'll probably cut your calories as well.
2) Expensive Magazines, Books, and Newspapers
Why buy magazines and books when you can find them in the library and go online to read the newspaper and some magazines. Of course, if you really miss sitting down with the paper, treat yourself to the Sunday weekend edition! (An added plus: the Sunday paper is a treasure trove for coupons!)
3) Ordering Take Out
Do you reach for the phone for pizza on the evenings when you face an empty fridge? Create a monthly menu in advance so that you'll be prepared for each meal. It just takes a little extra planning and effort.
4) Wasted Food
Enjoy your leftovers! The average American wastes about a pound of food a day. You can create croutons or French toast from old bread and soup from cooked vegetables or meat. Or simply brown-bag it for the next day's lunch!
5) Repeat Trips to the Supermarket
Have your shopping list in hand when you set off down the aisles. And don't go to the store on an empty stomach! This way, you can be sure to buy only the staples (and items on sale) you truly need!
6) Impulse Shopping
Create a wardrobe with the fabrics you like and the colors that flatter you most. Decide what you need to add to your closet and seek it out. Wait for sales or window-shop and then go to a thrift store or online to buy it for less.
7) Dry Cleaning
Do you think about your dry cleaning costs when you go shopping? That fancy blouse or snazzy pair of trousers will cost you oodles of money each week at the cleaner's. Try to invest in clothing that is wrinkle-resistant so you can just throw it into the washer/dryer.
8) Expensive Household Products
Just use vinegar! Dilute it with water and you'll be able to save money on store-bought cleaners for floors, windows, and appliances. You can also add baking soda to clear drains or even make your own laundry detergent.
9) Energy Guzzlers
Cut your utility bill and save energy by washing your clothes in cold water, keeping the fridge fully stocked so that it runs more efficiently, and using a Crock-Pot or slow cooker.
10) Transportation
Gas is a huge expense and the price isn't likely to go down anytime soon. Why not try carpooling, biking, or taking public transportation to work, when possible.
You'll be amazed at how much you can save when you identify problem areas and plan ahead to stop financial drains. Soon the flow will reverse itself and you will find yourself with plenty of cash to spare!
